Wisdom To Live By
I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
- Michael Jordan
生活的智慧
在我的职业生涯中,我投丢了超过9000次投篮。输掉了将近 300 场比赛。26次在最后一投的时刻辜负了教练和队友的信任。我一生中一次又一次地失败这就是我成功的原因。

78. Usher: The Man and his Music
Usher Raymond IV, known professionally as Usher, is one of the best-selling artists in American Music history. He has sold more than 23 million albums, in the United States alone, since he began his recording career in 1998. He is a singer, songwriter, dancer, and philanthropist. His second album My Way sold more than six million copies, making Usher a music megastar.
Born in Dallas, Texas on October 14, 1978, Usher spent the majority of his childhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His mother was from Texas, and his father was Haitian, who left the family when Usher was just a year old, leaving his mother to raise him alone. His mother eventually remarried, and Usher, along with his half-brother, were brought up by his step-father.
When he was nine years old, Usher began singing in a church choir. His grandmother decided he would have a better chance to develop his musical talents in Atlanta, Georgia, so the family relocated there. When Usher was just 11 years old, he joined a Rhythm and Blues band called NuBeginnings. This was the start of his musical career. At 13, Usher appeared on the popular 90's show Star Search. He was discovered by a major record label, and invited to Los Angeles to record. On August 30, 1994, Usher's self-titled album was released and become very popular. It peaked at No. 25 on Billboard's list.
His success in the music industry has been achieved by very few artists. He has sold more than 65 million records worldwide to date, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. His recordings have been ranked in the Top 10 eighteen times; he has had nine, No. 1 hits in his career. In 2002, Usher founded Vanity Records, and he has also ventured into other venues. He is part owner of the National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers, and owns a string of restaurants.
344. Billie Jean King: An Advocate of Equal Rights for Women
It was not so long ago that women in the United States were treated like second-class citizens. They did not have the same basic rights as their male counterparts had. At one time, women were not allowed to vote, own property, or get education. Since those dark times, the women of America have made great strides in their struggle for equality. One of their heroes was the great Billie Jean King.
King was a professional tennis player, who gained great success during her career on the women's tennis court. She won 39 Grand Slam Titles, 12 singles, 16 women's doubles, and 11 mixed doubles. She found success in just about every venue she participated in, including the Federation Cup Championships. King's greatest accomplishment, however, was an exhibition match that took place in Houston, Texas on September 20, 1973.
The 29-year-old King, who was at the top of her professional career at the time, faced a former Wimbledon Champion, Bobby Riggs. Riggs was one of the best men's players during his prime in the late 1930s and 40s. The 55-year-old Riggs challenged King to an exhibition match claiming that the women's game was far inferior to the men's game. He said that even a 55-year-old, "washed-up" former player could beat the top woman in the world. The stage was set for the match. However, it was not much of a match at all.
King soundly defeated Riggs without much trouble. The match was later exposed for what many people claimed it would be: a showcase for King to demonstrate that women could compete against men. The victory was part of the equal rights movement that was sweeping the nation during that time. King became an outspoken advocate of equal rights for women.
Young Men As Parents
Football star Michael Owen announced last week that, at 22, he will soon follow fellow England star, David Beckham, 27, into the labor-ward1.
This impression is backed up2 by a few surveys on the mating habits of young British. In fact, British young men are five times more likely than their Italian contemporaries to have settled down by 25 .
So what is happening? Has the"Loaded"generation3 gone soft? Celebrity has done a service by casting its limelight on a largely invisible side of fatherhood.
When Michael Douglas ( ageing American actor) reveals about the wrinkly end of the paternal experience, Michael Owen is doing for boy dads.
Powerful celebrity role models such as Beckham help young fathers feel less of an alien. Beckham, of course , has no problem with the breadwinner bit, but his distinguishing characteristic is his public endorsement of caring fatherhood. For a young dad, this can be liberation.
Just 20 percent of teenage fathers remain in touch with the mothers 15 years later. It means that 8, 000 children born to teenage dad this year will not be seeing him by the time they themselves are teenagers.
Does this matter to the child? Hugely. According to recent findings by Professor Judy Dunn at the UK's Institute of psychiatry, a close relationship between an estranged father and his child is highly beneficial to a child's development, particularly when the mother became pregnant as a teenager.
New research from Bristol University in England suggests that young fatherhood, far from being problematic, can bring young, disadvantaged men out of social exclusion.
The state has yet to appreciate the potential of young fathers summed up by Michael Owen's words:"I've had a few exciting moments in my career but nothing that compares to how I felt when Louise told me the news. "
The example of Michael Owen's public excitement may bolster some isolated young men. But as long as to many other people and institutions are ambivale
Writing a long book seemed to be too much for me. So, for a long time, I just wrote short articles. One day, inspiration(灵感) for an article hit me and, as I started writing, paragraphs began flowing out fast. It turned out to be too long to be an article. I thought it would not hurt to try self-publishing a booklet. The first printing of this 32-page black and white booklet sold out within a week. Here is something that I have learned through my experience.
1.Start small.
Don’t try to have a 400-page work as your first publication. I suggest you publish a booklet under 50 pages to launch your career as an author.
2.Ask for advice.
If you know some people who have published something, ask them for advice and help. You will gain useful information from them and save yourself many problems.
3. Be prepared to deal with“noes”.
When you put your heart into something only to hear“We’re not interested”,you may get hurt. But you must remind yourself that this is quite common. Every“yes”you receive comes after at least five“noes”,especially at the beginning. You need to revise your book many times to reduce the chances of being turned down.
4.The more you market, the more you sell.
You can publish an excellent book. But if no people know about it, you cannot expect many buyers.
Send out an e-mail to friends, family and business partners, telling them your book’s publication date. Ask them to help sell your book.
Do not be afraid to try novel ideas.
